The Mediator's
1Tim. 2:5 For [there
is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Most of us have heard
or come across this verse many times. I’d like to share with you what Strong’s
says about the biblical usage of this word. The word is mediator.
1) one
who intervenes between two, either in order to make or restore peace and
friendship, or form a compact, or for ratifying a covenant
2) a
medium of communication, arbitrator
Some have suggested it could be translated defense
attorney. To mediate means:
to settle (disputes, strikes, etc.) as an intermediary between parties; reconcile.
Currently Jesus Christ is our mediator. If there is a
dispute between God and us he is between God and us pleading our case. As far
as it goes he is the best one to mediate between us and God because he has
already paid the consequence of our failures. Those times we have not done as
the word of God says we are suppose to do he is there for us.
We have a job in this regard as well.
2 Corinthians
5: 17 Therefore
if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God,
who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the
ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in
Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto
them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then we are ambassadors
for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead,
be ye reconciled to God.
21 For he hath made him to be
sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in
him.
To understand the therefore in verse 17 read the whole chapter.
When Jesus Christ was here on earth his mission was to reconcile
man to God. We now are charged to do the same.
So now Jesus Christ sits as the one between us and God. For many
years I thought that this was unique to our day and time then someone showed me
just how wrong I was.
Go to the book of Genesis.
18:1 And the Lord appeared unto him in the
plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
2 And he lift up his eyes and
looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet
them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour
in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
4 Let a little water, I pray
you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:
5 And I will fetch a morsel of
bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore
are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
6 And Abraham hastened into
the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal,
knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.
7 And Abraham ran unto the
herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he
hasted to dress it.
8 And he took butter, and
milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood
by them under the tree, and they did eat.
9 And they said unto him, Where
is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.
10 And he said, I will
certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy
wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind
him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were
old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner
of women.
12 Therefore Sarah laughed
within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord
being old also?
13 And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore
did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14 Is any thing too hard for
the Lord? At the time appointed I
will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a
son.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I
laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
16 And the men rose up from
thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on
the way.
17 And the Lord said, Shall I hide from
Abraham that thing which I do;
18 Seeing that Abraham shall
surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall
be blessed in him?
19 For I know him, that he will
command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way
of the Lord, to do justice and
judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that
which he hath spoken of him.
20 And the Lord said, Because the cry of
Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
21 I will go down now, and see
whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come
unto me; and if not, I will know.
22 And the men turned their
faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
23 And Abraham drew near, and
said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
24 Peradventure there be fifty
righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for
the fifty righteous that are therein?
25 That be far from thee to do
after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the
righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge
of all the earth do right?
26 And the Lord said, If I find in Sodom
fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their
sakes.
27 And Abraham answered and
said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and
ashes:
28 Peradventure there shall
lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of
five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.
29 And he spake unto him yet
again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I
will not do it for forty's sake.
30 And he said unto him, Oh let
not the Lord be angry, and I will speak:
Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it,
if I find thirty there.
31 And he said, Behold now, I
have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall
be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.
32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak
yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will
not destroy it for ten's sake.
33 And the Lord went his way, as soon as he
had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
The first eight verses of this chapter show how hospitality was
important during biblical times. These angels and God just showed up. It was
custom to invite a stranger into your home, you would wash his feet to get the
dust off, you would make them dinner and they would eat with you. You were
being hospitable to people. Now I don’t
want to get involved in that teaching but I thought it worthy of mentioning.
From verse nine to sixteen is the record of God promising a son to
Abraham. Sarah’s reaction was to laugh at what was said. From the context it
seems that Sarah didn’t believe what was said. She thought she was well beyond
child bearing.
The two men (angles) headed for Sodom where Lott was living.
In verse 18 we find out that all nations shall be blessed in
Abraham.
In verse 20 we learn the reason for this visit by God.
20 And the Lord said, Because the cry of
Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
21 I will go down now, and see
whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come
unto me; and if not, I will know.
22 And the men turned their
faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
So Abraham got between God and Sodom. He then asked questions
aren’t you going to kill the good with the bad? Abe starts to bargain with God
if there are 50 righteous men will you spare the city all the way down to 10.
This is a way of saying even if there is 1 man standing for God, God would
spare the cities. Abraham probably thought it was all sewed up because Lott was
there, but hey Lott choose to dwell there among all that sin and it did
affect him.
So this was Abraham interceding for men with God as well as Jesus
Christ doing the same for us.
There is another record we need to look at
Exodus 32:1
And
when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the
people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us
gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us
up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
2 And Aaron said unto them,
Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your
sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
3 And all the people brake off
the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
4 And he received them at
their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten
calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of
the land of Egypt.
5 And when Aaron saw it, he
built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a
feast to the Lord.
6 And they rose up early on
the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the
people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
7 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get
thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have
corrupted themselves:
8 They have turned aside
quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten
calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be
thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen
this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
10 Now therefore let me alone,
that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will
make of thee a great nation.
11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot
against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with
great power, and with a mighty hand?
12 Wherefore should the
Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in
the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy
fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and
Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto
them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that
I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for
ever.
14 And the Lord repented of the evil which
he thought to do unto his people.
15 And Moses turned, and went
down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the
tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were
they written.
16 And the tables were the work
of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
17 And when Joshua heard the
noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of
war in the camp.
18 And he said, It is not the
voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry
for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
19 And it came to pass, as soon
as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and
Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them
beneath the mount.
20 And he took the calf which
they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed
it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
21 And Moses said unto Aaron,
What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon
them?
22 And Aaron said, Let not the
anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on
mischief.
23 For they said unto me, Make
us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought
us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
24 And I said unto them,
Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast
it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
25 And when Moses saw that the
people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their
enemies:)
26 Then Moses stood in the gate
of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come unto
me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
27 And he said unto them, Thus
saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man
his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp,
and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his
neighbour.
28 And the children of Levi did
according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about
three thousand men.
29 For Moses had said,
Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, even every man upon his
son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
30 And it came to pass on the
morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I
will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I shall make
an atonement for your sin.
31 And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people
have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
32 Yet now, if thou wilt
forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which
thou hast written.
33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever
hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
34 Therefore now go, lead the
people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel
shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their
sin upon them.
35 And the Lord plagued the people, because
they made the calf, which Aaron made.
Now this is the whole chapter and is worth the read but for the
most part I am just going to go over the first part of the chapter.
The first part of the chapter you see the people demanding of
Aaron that he make them Gods made of gold. It does not say if Aaron tried to
stop the people or if he just gave in at once. I would say that it is likely
that he gave in at once. That however is just what I believe happened. In any
case Aaron made idols made of gold and the people went wild and did all sorts
of nasty things. It was made in the image of a calf which was a god of
fertility. That is why it says that the people were naked. In most of the
cultures they had specific gods for specific meanings. Each God had his
category that way if you didn't like the idea behind one god you could choose
another.
So the people are having their orgy so God says “Go, get thee
down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have
corrupted themselves:”
He further says they are stiffnecked which means stubborn in their
ways. God calls them this many times so I guess they just never learned.
Then God says he is going to wipe them out and make a new nation
of Moses. Moses says, hey God you sure you want to do that what will they say
in Egypt about you then? Moses was mediating between the nation of Israel and
God. Moses was between
God and the nation of Israel.
So never assume that Jesus Christ was the first to get between God
and God’s people to argue for the people. He is just the best person to have in
that position.
When you pray for someone this is also a form of intersession.
