Solomon
1 Kings 3:1 Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married
his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished building
his palace and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem. 2The
people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places, because a temple
had not yet been built for the Name of the Lord. 3 Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the
instructions given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices
and burned incense on the high places.
Now your first question should be what high places are? Well I will
explain for those who do not know. In the Hebrew Scriptures when they built a
pagan temple they would build them on top of hill or mountain so they could be
seen miles away. Hezekiah
tore down many of these temples which his father King Ahaz had built during his
reign. You may also read about the Grove. Grove is the Hebrew Ashera(h) = "groves (for idol worship)". It
is always translated Grove all 40 times it is used.
This leads us to
a verse that needs to be looked at
Psalm 121:1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from
whence cometh my help.
This is a terrible translation. It is a question not a
statement. If you invert the first two words Will I you get the true sense of
the meaning of this verse.
Psalm 121:1 will I lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from
whence cometh my help? If you read the rest of the psalms you will see that
David looked to YWHA for help not some pagan idol.
Here is the great commandment.
Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
It is not
complicated God wants us to make him first thing in our lives and put nothing
ahead of him.
Once as
Jesus teaching and a man asked a
question of him which is the greatest commandment ? He responded:
Matthew 22:37
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with
all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
I was talking with a pastor and we turned to this subject I
quoted this verse.
Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:
this is the first commandment.
He told me I was wrong he said it never said and with all
thy strength he quoted Matthew 22:37
Well I explained that a
single verse may not give all the information on a subject. I had taken a class
many years earlier where I leaned the how of “rightly dividing” (2 Timothy
2:15). If you would like to take an updated version of class I took, today’s
version is One Day With The
Creator It is free, of course if you watch it and you feel so
inspired you can make a contribution. You will learn the ways the bible
interprets its self. There is no guess work no I think, just a clear way to
understand the scriptures. I am still learning after 40 years of working the
scripture it truly is a life time project.

4 The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was
the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings
on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a
dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”
6 Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your
servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and
upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given
him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
7 “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in
place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to
carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a
great people, too numerous to count or number. 9 So give your servant a
discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and
wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
10 The Lord was pleased that
Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for
this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death
of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will
give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone
like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have
not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no
equal among kings. 14 And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees
and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” 15 Then
Solomon awoke—and he realized it had been a dream.
He
returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord’s covenant and
sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then he gave a feast for
all his court.
Deut. 17:14 When thou art come unto the land which the LORD
thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt
say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me; 15
Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall
choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest
not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother. 16 But he shall not
multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end
that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye
shall henceforth return no more that way. 17 Neither shall he multiply wives to
himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to
himself silver and gold.
As you can see in verse 14 having a king over Israel was not God's idea it was mans idea, Israel wanted to be like the other nations. This is a human reaction like keeping up with the Jone's. This as you will see is what lead to Solomon's problems.
In verse 16 it says: 16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
1 Kings 4:26 And
Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve
thousand horsemen.
In verse 17 it states 17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
1 Kings 11:1 But king Solomon loved many strange women,
together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites,
Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; 2 Of the nations concerning which the LORD
said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall
they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their
gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. 3 And he had seven hundred wives,
princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.
4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his
heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as
was the heart of David his father. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the
goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6
And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the
LORD, as did David his father. 7 Then did Solomon build an high place for
Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for
Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. 8 And likewise did he for all
his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.
These wives lead Solomon astray.
1 Kings 11:9 And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because
his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him
twice, 10 And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go
after other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded. 11 Wherefore
the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast
not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will
surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant. 12
Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father's sake: but I
will rend it out of the hand of thy son. 13 Howbeit I will not rend away all
the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant's sake,
and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen.
The word rend means to tear away. God was going to take away 10 tribes because of what Solomon had done. this is the split that ultimately lead to the dispersal. Later on Nebuchadnezzar took the ten tribes of the north captive and he sent Gentiles in to live in their land which is how Samaria was formed. The descendents of these people were the ones who were in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost ask what the speaking in tongues was all about because they heard the 12 speaking the wonderful works of of God in their language.
26 And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda,
Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he
lifted up his hand against the king. 27 And this was the cause that he lifted
up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of
the city of David his father. 28 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of
valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him
ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph. 29 And it came to pass at
that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the
Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and
they two were alone in the field: 30 And Ahijah caught the new garment that was
on him, and rent it in twelve pieces: 31 And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten
pieces: for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the
kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee: 32 (But
he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake,
the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:) 33 Because that
they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the
Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children
of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine
eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father. 34
Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him
prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake, whom I chose,
because he kept my commandments and my statutes: 35 But I will take the kingdom
out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes. 36 And unto
his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway
before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.
37 And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul
desireth, and shalt be king over Israel. 38 And it shall be, if thou wilt
hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is
right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant
did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for
David, and will give Israel unto thee.
39 And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever. 40
Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into
Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
41 And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he
did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
42 And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty
years. 43 And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David
his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.
Here is a link where you can see about the the kings of Israel both the northern tribes and Judah and Benjamen. Notice that the 10 northern tribes never had a good king there were a few in Judah but also more evil kings chart
