Hebrews 7

All Scripture is quoted is from the REV

For a bit of context let’s go back to 6:13

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, Surely I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply you abundantly. 15 And thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

This is a Hebrew Idiom.

Lamsa translates this from the Aramaic
Look at verse 14 it says
Saying, Blessing, I will bless you and multiplying, I will multiply you.

The Hebrew Aramaic text handles it this way:
14 saying: "With blessing, I will bless you, and with increase, I will increase you.”

Old Abe endured and recieved some of what God had promised the rest will come after the resurrection of the just.

16 For people swear by that which is greater than themselves, and for them an oath given for confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17 In the same way, God, intending to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of his purpose, guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in each of which it is impossible for God to lie, we have strong encouragement, we who have found refuge in laying hold of the hope set before us. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, both sure and steadfast, and extending into the inner part of the veil, 20 where, as a forerunner, Jesus entered on our behalf, having become a high priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.

Verse 16 is difficult to translate:

This is a difficult verse to translate because of the various phrases in the Greek that can be placed in different positions. This accounts for the differences in the English translations, which all seem to say the same thing in slightly different ways. A strictly literal rendition of the Greek is so awkward that it is hard to understand. The point of the verse is that people swear by things greater than themselves, and when an oath is given for confirmation, (such as “I swear by God”) that brings an end to the dispute. The Greek, not in the order of the Greek text, could be structured as follows:
καὶ αὐτοῖς ὁ ὅρκος εἰς βεβαίωσιν πέρας πάσης ἀντιλογίας
and for them the oath [given] for confirmation [is] an end of every dispute
People swear to many things and they have no intention of keeping. To tell the truth they seem to think is subjective what they think is the truth. Many times it has nothing to do with the truth. The agenda they have is far more important than what may have happened. Ask a Republican and a Democrat what happened and you will get completely different answers. You would never know they were talking about the same thing.

We deal with truth truth is NOT subjective truth is absolute no matter what anyone may say. If it isn’t it is then not truth. If you step off a building you will fall not matter how much someone may disagree.

In verse 19 it talks about our hope as being an anchor and it extends us out past the curtain that is talking about the holy of holies. That is what it is talking about in in Matthew 27:51, Mark 15:38, and Luke 23:45

Most modern versions translate the verse something like the ESV

where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

So onto Chapter 7

Hebrews Chapter 7

1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 and to whom Abraham divided a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. 3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest for all time.

So this Melchizedek was a king and a priest sounds like someone else we all know our king and our high priest and he was dealing with the descendants of Abraham where Melchizedek dealt with Abraham. Old Abe had won a war and gave a tenth of all the spoils he took. Mel was called righteous his name mens King of of Righteousness Now Jesus is our high priest forever

4 Now consider how great this man was, to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth out of the best of the spoils of war. 5 And those of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have a commandment to collect tithes from the People according to the law, that is, from their brothers, although they also have come out of the loins of Abraham. 6 But he whose genealogy is not counted from them has taken tithes from Abraham, and has blessed him who has the promises. 7 But without any dispute, the less is blessed by the better. 8 And in the one case, men who die receive tithes, but in the other case, he receives them about whom it is testified that he lives. 9 And, so to speak, even Levi, who receives tithes, has paid tithes through Abraham, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

Let's look at this in the NIV

4 Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! 5 Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. 6 This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7 And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. 8 In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. 9 One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.

There are many parallels between Jesus and Mel.

11 Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the People received the law), what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be reckoned after the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, there is also of necessity a change in the law. 13 For the one about whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has ever officiated at the altar. 14 For it is clear that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing concerning priests. 15 And this is even clearer if another priest like Melchizedek arises, 16 who has been made a priest, not on the basis of a legal regulation concerning the flesh, but on the basis of the power of an endless life, 17 for it is testified of him: You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Verse 17 is a gnome which is a quote from the Hebrew Scriptures, Psalms 110:4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."

That is David prophesying about the coming promised seed. The entire psalm is about the coming of the promised seed.

God knew man born with corruption would never be able to live under law and walk perfectly he needed another Adam born without the corruption but still having the freedom of will so he could choose the corruption. That was why Jesus was able to walk the law he had a pure blood line with no corruption but could have said no way anytime.

18 For on the one hand, there is a disannulling of the preceding commandment because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand, there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

20 And inasmuch as it was not without the taking of an oath 21 (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but he with an oath by him who says of him, The Lord swore and will not change his mind, you are a priest forever), 22 according to such an oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

The covenant became set by the walk and resurrection of Jesus.

23 And the former priests, on the one hand, were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he, on the other hand, because he remains forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 And consequently for all time he is able to save those who draw near to God through him, because he always is alive to make intercession for them.
26 For indeed, it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, devout, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens, 27 who does not need to offer up sacrifices daily, like those high priests, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the People, for this he did once and for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men as high priests who have weaknesses, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

Jesus has become a unchangeable priest. He is there and able to save Not Muhammad, not Buddha, nor any other person who has lived or fictional character Salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone.

Jesus need not offer sacrifices he is the sacrificial lamb and no more sacrifice for sin need be done.
