Hebrews 10
Hebrews 10
Before we start into chapter ten we need to review a bit of
chapter nine. If you don’t know this then chapter 10 will make no sense. We
will review the section on Redemption through His Blood.
11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that
have come,
He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that
is not made by hands and is not of this creation.
12 He did not enter by the blood of goats and
calves, but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus
securing eternal redemption.
Redemption was gotten by the blood of Christ. His sacrifice
was what brought it. Nothing we do could save us because we are born with a sin
nature, We needed a new Adam who unlike the first one listen to and obeyed the
instruction God gave him.
13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the
ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them
so that their bodies are clean, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the
eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may
serve the living God!
In Exodus it says how the passover lamb had to be
unblemished.
Exo 12:5
Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year:
ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
Our Lamb was without blemish.
15 Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new
covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal
inheritance, now that He has died to redeem them from the transgressions
committed under the first covenant.
The old covenant is still in effect. So those who teach that
we are living under the new covenant are wrong. There are still things that need
to be fulfilled like Israel being priest to the world among several other
things.
16 In the case of a will, it is necessary to
establish the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will does not take effect until the one who made it has
died; it cannot be executed while he is still alive.
He had to die for the new covenant to start.
That is true still there are parts of the old that still need
to be fulfilled so the new covenant can start.
18 That is why even the
first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19 For when Moses had proclaimed every commandment
of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with
water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant,
which God has commanded you to keep.”
21 In the same way, he sprinkled with blood the
tabernacle and all the vessels used in worship. 22 According to the law, in fact, nearly everything must be
purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
If you want to turn to the law alone you can never be saved.
For us to be purified there had to be shed blood.
23 So it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly
things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves
with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a man-made copy of the true
sanctuary, but He entered heaven itself, now to appear on our behalf in the presence
of God.
25 Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again,
as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not
his own. 26 Otherwise, Christ
would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But now
He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the
sacrifice of Himself.
27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after
that to face judgment, 28 so also
Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second
time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him.
So
on to chapter 10
1 The
law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities
themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated
endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2
Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would
have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their
sins. 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 4 It is impossible
for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
I
want to look at verse 1 in the NLT which I believe conveys what is being said
correctly.
The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a
dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves.
The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and
again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing
for those who came to worship.
It says in Romans 3:20 NIV Therefore no one will be declared
righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we
become conscious of our sin.
Here is the ESV “For by works of the law no human being will
be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.”
This was part of the problem under the law it never got you
to the point of salvation. It fell short no man born with a sin nature had the
chance to live the perfect life. It took a new Adam.
1 Corinthians 15:45 KJV And so it is written, The first man
Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
The
law establish what righteousness was. Man because of his sin nature could not
live up to the law, but because of what Jesus Christ did we no longer live
under the law.
The
animal sacrifices always fell short they were a temporary at best because as soon
as you fell short gain there went another animal sacrifice.
5
Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering
you did not desire,
but a body you prepared
for me;
6 with burnt offerings and
sin offerings
you were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I
am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your
will, my God.’ ”
8 First
he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did
not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in
accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your
will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we
have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for
all.
Verse
5-8 is a quote from Psalms 40:6-8
6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—
but
my ears you have opened
burnt
offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
7Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
it
is written about me in the scroll.
8I desire to do your will, my God;
your
law is within my heart.”
God
never wanted animal sacrifices he wanted our worship, praise, and obedience.
None of which he got under the law. It took the
new Adam walking without sin for God to get what he wanted.
11
Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and
again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But
when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down
at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be
made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those
who are being made holy.
Verse
11 says the priest would offer the same sacrifices every day but it never took
away the sins.
In
12 the new priest (Jesus Christ) offered the sacrifice once and for all and
when he finished he sat down.He now waits for his enemies to be made a
footstool and we wait to meet him in the air.
Many
times when it says someone sat down it means the job or project was finished.
15
The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:
16 “This is the covenant I
will make with them
after that time, says the
Lord.
I will put my laws in
their hearts,
and I will write them on
their minds.”
17
Then he adds:
“Their sins and lawless
acts
I will remember no more.”
In verse 15 The article
the is in the text therefore it is speaking about God as opposed to the gift
from God which is holy spirit no article the and lower case on the h asd s
Verse 16 and 17 is a quote
from Jeremiah 31:33,34 which is the promise for
a new covenant with God and Israel. This does not apply to the church of the
body. It is made with Israel. The church of the body doesn’t have a covenant
relationship with God we have a promise which is given in 1 Thessalonians
4:13ff as well as several other promises
God made.
We have a great teaching on this subject we have a youtube playlist I will put
into the description:
18
And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer
necessary.
Verse
18 is just lain outstanding. The sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary
because Christ fully paid the price.
In
19 there is only one word used for brothers and sisters it is the Greek word adelphos
it means a fellow believer, united to another by the
bond of affection so it can read Brothers and sisters It reads that way in most
modern translations.
26
If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the
truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of
judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who
rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three
witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be
punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an
unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has
insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to
avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a
dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32
Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured
in a great conflict full of suffering. 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed
to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who
were so treated. 34 You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully
accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you
yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 35 So do not throw away your
confidence; it will be richly rewarded.
In
verse 27 it states that we will have judgement to look forward to if we
continue to sin. It does not say we will lose our salvation but we will loose
rewards. Which agrees with 1 Corinthians 3:13-15.
It
then starts talking about the law but we are under grace so that no longer
applies to us.
We
will be rewarded if we persevere
36
You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will
receive what he has promised.37 For,
“In just a little while,
he who is coming will come
and will not delay.”
38
And,
“But my righteous one will
live by faith.
And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks
back.”
39
But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those
who have faith and are saved.
Christ is coming to meet us just as it is promised in the word of God!
