Like the books of 1&2 Timothy still there is much we can learn from it because most of the things listed would apply to everyone unless talking about an existing condition. We will see that in verse 2. Gaius is mentioned 5 times between Acts and 3 John. In Acts 19 during the riot he was captured by the craftsmen. In Acts 20 he accompanied Paul into Asia. He was with Paul when Paul wrote Romans. In 1 Corinthians he was one of the people Paul had baptised. It is not clear if this is the same person. As in 2 John the word elder is either someone who is old or it is also used a as an elder in the church sometimes called a deacon or a bishop. I want to look at two verses today. They are two verses that sit next to each other. The first verse will cause your heart to soar the second can cause your heart to break. God handles it in such a matter of fact way that it is very easy to miss it. I know from reading it myself many times I did miss it. Too often we read sections of the word and it is just words passing by and we put no thought into what it is saying to us. It is like you take a section of the word and you have read it dozens if not hundreds of times and suddenly it’s like you are reading it for the first time and it opens up to you like a sunflower opening towards the sun. We chose God (through) Roman’s 10:9 then He chooses us and saves us. This verse is not saying that God chooses apart from our will as some teach. Quite the contrary. If God could choose us apart from our will, why would Paul have to endure anything at all? He could live a good life and God would choose who He willed. No we must strive to reach out with the Good News so that people can hear and then choose God—and our striving may mean hardship . There is a figure of speech called metonymy: Met-o'-ny-my; or, Change of Noun When one name or noun is used instead of another, to which it stands in a certain relation. The word spirit here the manifestations of holy spirit. In this case the context makes it clear that “spirit” refers specifically to prophecies. The Christian is not to believe every “spirit,” i.e., every prophecy and spiritual utterance, but test them to see if they are from God because many “false prophets” have gone out into the world.
