THEY BEGAN TO SPEAK IN OTHER TONGUES

THEY BEGAN TO SPEAK IN OTHER TONGUES

In the book of acts chapter 2 we have an event that had never happened before occur. This alone should arrest our attention. No place in the Hebrew scriptures or in the gospels had this happened before. Jesus had talked to the apostles about some that was suppose to happen but this was in the book of Acts.

Acts 1:4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Look at verse 5 there is a contrast set up this is the way John did it but we are moving onto something new. There is a verse in Ephesians that needs to be considered at this point

Ephesians 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

So if what Jesus said in Acts chapter 1 is true then we should move on to the new baptism sometimes call baptism in the spirit.

3So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”

“John’s baptism,” they replied.

4 Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.

Now we will get into this in some more detail later.

What I wanted you to see is that you can’t get bogged down in the gospels only. There are other parts to consider. I am not trying to brush away the gospels I am just not stopping with them there are 22 other books to be considered from Acts to 3 John. These are books that are written to the people of our age. The bible speaks many times of ages.

The Greek word aion is many times translated world it should be translated age it is a time word not a place word.

Okay I just used 420 words to set this all up if you need more information we have teachings on Speaking in tongues I can recommend the book The Gift of Holy Spirit The Power To Be Like Christ as a great help you can find it at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble both in print editions as well as kindle and nook editions.

Acts 2 (NIV)

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

This was the first time that anyone spoke in tongues it was not the last time which many seem to think it was.

God had been waiting for this day to happen for four thousand years. There is much more information available to us than was to the 12 and the disciples on the day of Pentecost we know how significant this all was. One thing please don’t deify the men in the bible they were fallible they made mistakes I can prove it to you there was a meeting and Paul told Peter you are to blame in Galatians 2:14 . Just because one of these men said something does not make it true. The reason I bring this up is because Peter said something in his sermon on Pentecost that was not accurate.

Act2:16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “ ‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

From verse 17 on none of that stuff happened. Peter just remembered these verses and it was the closest thing he could relate to what was said.

That sermon with the exception of this one part was awesome and I suggest you read it. Remember we have so much information available to us than Peter had. He still got it 99% correct.

Acts 8

I am not reading this whole chapter I suggest you take the time to do so. That way you can see the context of what we read below.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

It says in verse 16 that the holy spirit hadn’t come on them yet. How could they tell they had received holy spirit because that was the proof on the day of Pentecost that they had received holy spirit they spoke in tongues!

Simon had offered them money so that whoever he laid his hands on might receive the holy spirit and Peter said to him your silver go to some of the translation say your money go to destruction with you. Again here is something we have since learned could not happen it said earlier that Simon believed so he was already saved. Just because we get saved it doesn't mean our minds get straight instantly that is something I am still working on 40 years plus later.

Acts 9

17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.

Again it says he was baptized if that is not enough proof for you Paul says:
1Cor 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

1Co 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

So Paul spoke in tongues it also says in 1 Cor. 15 “I thank my God I speak in tongues more than ye all.”

1 Cor.12, 13, and 14 explains speaking in tongues it’s operation and how to use it. Would God go to all that trouble if it went out with the death of the Apostles? This is in the part of the bible that are instruction for the christian believer.

Acts 10
34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

This is the first time the gentiles (all non Jewish Folk) spoke in tongues. The Jews who were with Peter as well as Peter were floored. There was not even a hint of this before that day the Jews considered the gentiles lower than dogs. Even Jesus didn’t feel he should deal with them see Luke 7:8 Mat. 15:27 Mark 7:28 so when they spoke in tongues it fried the Jews brain cells.

Again read 10 and 11 for yourself so you can see it develop in context.

Acts 19

1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”

There you have and it could not be clearer John had said believe on him that came after him Jesus They were baptized in the name of the lord and spoke in tongues.

Those twelve men went on to take the word over the world. They were all powered by the holy spirit.

Why don’t you do the same!!
